There is so much written about Mara's and Tisch's involvement in football operations, I am thinking a discussion about what the role of ownership should be is worthwhile. Here are my thoughts:
1, Obviously all non football operations areas and the hiring of upper management personnel including the GM are the total domain of ownership. Equally obvious is game planning and in game management is the total domain of HC and GM.
2. I think there is a world of difference between a new owner and the ownership situation with the Giants. It is quite apparent that a new owner is heavily reliant on the GM or VP of football operations. In fact a VP of football operations makes the most sense to me in a new ownership situation or where ownership only wants a minimal involvement with football operations.
3. Where there is joint involvement is in the area of contracts and certain personnel decisions. Specifically personnel decisions involving large contracts which inherently puts ownership involvement in first round draft choices as well as free agency.
4. In a situation where ownership has had a great deal of experience such as the Giants, the amount of involvement in key personnel decisions is where I think the personalities of ownership, GM and HC come into play. According to the following site there are 16 different types of personalities: www.personalityperfect.com/16-personality-types/
5. I do not believe that anyone is completely one type of personality. My experience has influenced me to believe that the key aspect is how people work together is communications. Specifically the ability to listen, formulate one's opinion or point of view and to what extent authority has a domineering personality.
6. As outsiders, fans and media have impressions of the role and interactions of ownership, GM and HC. Those in media that have been covering the Giants for a long time may have a close relationship with ownership and/or the GM and HC providing them with an informed view of the relationships and decisions by among ownership and upper management of football operations.
7. With all of the above said, a question that begs answering is at what point should ownership back off and let the GM have the final decision. I am thinking that on pure money decisions, ownership should have the final decision. Once the money decision or the status of a player like Eli is made, I think that ownership should have the right to reject a decision as opposed to final decision. An example might be the first round draft pick and for whatever reason a particular player is not acceptable to ownership. Therefore that player comes off the board while the final choice is made by the GM in concert with the HC and scouting dept.
Your thoughts? Please do not hesitate to take the discussion in whatever direction that interests you the most.
