Where do we go with this group of misfits? After watching alot of football yesterday, I can only cringe and weep when watching our OL
It is childs play to run a stunt and confuse our OL on who to pick up and get pressure. any D coordinator that has any thoughts in their head can do this and create confusion with our players. Is it skill, will or coaching?
What are we going to do to fix this mess as it is priority #1B behind fixing our D? I contend it will only get better with a new OL coach! :-)
1. Left Tackle. Solder is under contract and I just can't see us eating that much $ without a viable solid alternative. The draft will dictate what we do with him as I see us definitely drafting either a RT or LT in Rd 1 or 2. If we plan to roll with him, draft WIRFs for RT. If we plan to move him to RT to see if he can improve, try to get Wills from Bama. Dont know if either will make it past Round 1
2. LG- I will probably get killed on this but I would have Hernandez's spot up for grabs. He has regressed and I can only tell from the replays I see on sites like Brian Baldingers and some of the analysts stuff that he is a hot mess. Not only getting over powered on pass rushes but a huge part of missing assignments and whiffs. Run blocking looks even worse...I am not a PFF guy so not sure how he rates but I am sure its declining. I would put Gates as a contender to compete for either Guard spot. He is only going to improve.
3. Center- hello ? Can we get a NFL calibre center? bring back Jones??? Halapio looks done if he has the achilles injury ..wish him the best. Pulley can be a backup but we need to either go FA and have the cash to do it or draft . The kid from Wisconison is obviously the target but not sure we can afford to do this early enough to get him unless we get to trade down and grab him. Getting him in Rd2 (assuming a trade down?) and a RT/LT would be heaven. I don't know the guys available in Free Agency (Center from denver is a FA but got hurt) to comment on how we fix this via FA
4. RG- Zeitler. He played hurt this year without a doubt but he is maybe our only shoe in? Again....I like what I saw against some bad teams from Gates but between him, Zeitler and Hernandez, 2 of those spots need to be filled.
5. RT- Gates didn't look great here against the Iggles. Got over powered and not sure he is a tackle. What does Big George who was on IR from Kentucky have? Is Solder moved to RT to see if he improves and isn't DJ's blind side? Do we just go WIRFs and fill this void with a stud? Pay Titans Conklin to come here or is that another "oh no" Solder move of desperation of the tackle market?
Fun playing Gm when our GM may be retiring this Tuesday (the rumor mill) as he is 70, battled cancer, and I would say maybe isn't what we need right now whether he earned the right to stay one more year or not. We have debated that alot here.
Regardless, we need 2 spots without a doubt whether they come via FA , draft or a combo.
And that is Center and Tackle (right or left depending on coach, Solder and alot of other factors). I would even say 3 spots with both tackle spots up for grabs and center.
This is the year we can make a play to solidify the Hog Mollies for the next few years and try to do it right.
