Don't quote this main post. Either quote sections or just reply below because the videos will make it long.
I usually do my draft analysis a month or two before the draft. I just want to come and make this before the hype train starts for Isaiah Simmons.
The glaring hole on the Giants defense is a guy who can get after the QB and drop back into coverage. The linebacker position is evolving quickly in this modern NFL as more and more QBs are becoming mobile. Isaiah Simmons is the solution to this problem and he should be the #1 choice on our big board when the #4 overall selection is ready.
Why Isaiah Simmons? As the top player on Clemson's stout defense, Simmons can be seen all over the field. He's an absolute freak athlete that the NFL is begging for. His projected 40 time is under 4.4 at an astonishing 6'4 height at 230lbs. He was a track star out of high school. He ran a faster 200 meter in high school than Odell Beckham. When you see his film, what's amazing is his versatility. He has incredibly long arms and that leads to his ability to cover more ground. He blitzes off the edge, he drops back into coverage against WRs, he can play safety, etc. But the role he would fit beautifully in this modern NFL is as a linebacker who is able to blitz and cover. I don't see a TE in football he couldn't cover because of his incredible speed, quickness and range. Furthermore, he's the athlete that you want in this modern NFL with guys like Lamar Jackson running around guys like Bo Jackson in a game of Tecmo Bowl.
He's unique, he's a freak, and this is a game of athletes. Below I want to highlight a few clips of his ability.
Look at the power he showcases on this blitz. You don't expect a guy this long, rangy, and with this much speed to go against an RB. Twist him with pure power, throw him to the ground, then get the QB all in one smooth motion:
I love the angle of this video. I imagine #12 being a guy like Lamar Jackson trying to run it after the pocket collapses, and there's Isaiah Simmons spying the QB and going for the hunt. Just look at how fast he gains on this guy:
This is taken from last week's game against Ohio State in the college playoffs. Simmons is the sole reason why this play wasn't a huge gain. Ohio State's RB (Dobbins) is INCREDIBLY quick/fast.
Here's another play from that same game last week against Ohio State. Reads the QB, jumps the route, interception!
Another play that I love here. #8 on Georgia Tech is Tobias Oliver. He's a very elusive mobile QB. Just look at the range of Simmons on this play. He just grabs his jersey and yanks him to the ground. He's a nightmare for mobile QBs.
Simmons is blitzing on the left side (against the LT). Look at his ability to bend around the LT and accelerate. Reminds me of Josh Allen's tape last year. Great burst off the edge, his ability to plant his foot into the ground and change directions is fantastic. The greats do that:
I just love this play. He has man coverage on an RB. He's paying attention to him potentially coming out to run a route, at the same time he's still spying the QB. He decides at his angle to chase after the QB. He runs him down incredibly fast for a sack:
Here he is showcasing his coverage skills against the slot WR. Here you can see his Safety experience being displayed. His ability to keep his head on a swivel and locate the ball in the air, is exactly what you expect from your starting CB (not even Eli Apple is able to do it. lol).
Phenomenal height, length, range on him. Just look at how high he's off the ground compared to the ball. Unreal. I imagine his vertical is going to be in the high 30 inch range (38-40"). This tweet says that his max jump was 11'10"!!! That's higher than every prospect in the 2018 NBA combine 6'4" and below.
1 v 1 against the RB in space. He's really tall, but look at how small he gets to completely blow up the play. Targets his lower body and wipes him out:
Look at this shifty WR try to run around Simmons. He's just too long, too quick. I actually laughed at this play. Just the way he just grabs him by the legs and throws him to the ground. He's like: "Sorry, that's not going to work!":
He's just a modern NFL athelete that has a rare combo of length, speed, and skill. He can cover, he can blitz, he's just everything we need in our 3-4 defense. Literally not a person in the draft we could use more at #4.
