The argument against Gettleman comes down to this,
He walks in the door looks at a 3 win team and thinks they can contend with a few moves,
that speaks to his ability to judge where his franchise is.
Hey Eli looked good the prior year in the Philly game , so we can win with him
did he watch the film from the other games ? Most people on this board knew the giants should
have been rebuilt, why didn't the GM ?
As for the coaching hire, Gettlemans job is to go identify the best candidates , interview them first , and bring his recommendation to the owners. The fact that he looked at Shurmur , a failed HC in cleveland , and chose him
is a major mark against him . Why did he pick Shurmur- a hot OC from the vikings , who did a good job with a mobile QB in Keenum - does that describe Eli at all ? Because he needed an adult in the room ? lol
Draft choices- Gettleman has done a good job with picks , every GM hits on some picks, and misses on others . Most GM's can point to picks they hit later in the draft ,. TO be fair, you really can't evaluate a draft class for 3 years, last year at this time people thought Bj Hill, Carter and Will Hernandez were major parts going forward , now a year later they have regressed . Maybe a year from now Daniel Jones is a pro bowl QB and Baker is an all pro , or maybe the opposite . Right now Jones looks like he has potential and Baker looks problematic . He does get credit for finding talent later in the draft- Slayton , Connelly possibly .
The barkley pick- a great player, but the wrong guy for a franchise who should have been rebuilding , if they didn't like any of the Qb's- Darnold, allen , jackson then trade down and take the sure fire HOF guard- Nelson , but they brought in a win now RB to a rebuilding team with a bad offensive line , so now you are 2 years gone in a 7-8? year prime - most great Rb's are done by about 30 . And they are also pretty close to having to pay Barkley big money.
It's about positional value , there are so many great RB's taken in the 2nd, 3rd,4th round that taking one at 2 isn't great value .
Rebuilding the OL- his number 1 priority when he took the job- how has that gone, oh after 2 years and huge free agent signings, trades and draft picks it is still bad, that's a huge hit . I did laugh how at his press conference he said his number 1 priority was getting the Qb and cleaning up the cap- way to change the goalposts .
Free agents - This is about roster building and where Gettleman fails the worst , give him credit for Golden , taking a chance with a guy coming off an ACL he played very well . Past that, there isn't a move that is good , Nate Solder- i understand LT was a major problem, but the solution can't be overpay a guy to a point where he is making 20.5 million next year- a raise of over a 1 million , Omameh- a guy so bad he cut after 8 games, Stewart- a guy that was totally done 2 years before - oh right he was a mentor lol, Kareem Martin- a total bust , Bethea- horrible, why does a rebuilding team need a 35 yr old safety . So yes Mara he needs to improve his batting average it is currently batting about 100 . Letting Kennard and Okwara walk for nothing ? Not superstars but at least productive guys the giants could use.
Trades and cap management - The good trades first- Zeitler for Vernon , they needed a guard and Zeitler played decently despite a shoulder injury .
OBJ for 16th pick and Peppers- The issue with this is that why did Gettleman sign OBJ first and then deal him, by doing that he took a huge dead cap hit with hamstrung his roster , and according to reports the 49ers had wanted Beckham , and had been in contract with the giants for months . Then Gettleman trades him to cleveland without checking with them at all, to see if they could beat the offer . Nevermind letting it be known to the league - quietly that OBJ was available. Gettleman did a good job getting a run stuffer in Lawrence who can push the pocket , Peppers is a decent player who Gettleman tried to convince the fans was first round value because he had been drafted 16th the year before .
The Leonard Williams trade- a total disaster . It doesn't make any sense, the giants were 2-7, going nowhere and Gettleman trades for LW- a free agent and gives up a high 3 and 4-5 for him , to "test drive " him, instead of keeping the picks- which he insisted is the best way to build the team and just signing him as a free agent . Now he either has to tag him- 16 million hit, let him walk- which makes him looks ridiculous , or overpay him. And listen to LW own words if you think the giants are getting a discount .
So you keep Gettleman put him in charge of 80or so million in free agent money what is the definition of insanity ? It's doing the same thing and expecting different results . You are also letting him have a major say in picking the coach , because that went so well last time . Also , Gettleman has to be a on the hot seat , why would a coach come in here with a 70 yr old GM with health issues and a job situation that is unsteady , to work with Gettleman . What happens to that coach if the giants suck next year- and they fire Gettleman , than that coach has a new GM who may or may not like that coach going forwards as his boss.
The giants could have just wiped the slate clean- and a team that is 9-23 in 2 years needs a clean slate, and moved forward instead they keep the same old status quo, you know the scouts that have been there for decades, Chris mara as the president of pro personnel , and Gettleman and wonder why nothing changes , i feel bad for the new coach.
