I personally think we're seeing a disturbing trend. All but one of these FA signings has been someone these guys have coached before. The TE is the exception from what I know now. It just seems like we're limiting the talent pool. This is exactly how Bettcher tried to set up his defense. Bradbury is as legit as they come, so give Gettleman some credit there for originally drafting him. The rest, I think it was easier to sign them than others, so they did. Fleming can't play left tackle, so when we draft one and move Solder, we've got three right tackles. Gates has done everything they've asked of him so far, and is really just learning his position. Between Gates, Fleming and Solder, I'd probably take Gates as the RT. I hope these guys all prove me wrong; but as far as I can see, we're settling for second and third rate talent, and still paying them some good salaries.

For everyone's sake I hope it's a good thing. Lazur is correct, we're seeing similar signings throughout the league. Maybe not with the big names but with the 2nd and 3rd tier guys, look at Ron Rivera.
It's probably more obvious to us that these connections exist because we have the media and posters digging into the history of our signings. I wonder how many other signings around the league has a connection of either a past college coach or maybe NFL position coach.
Bettcher certainly didn't set a good precedent for signing familiar players but Judge's and Graham's theme of not having a set system and selecting players for what you know the can do rather than what they can't or trying to fit them into a system gives hope.
The other thing that give me hope is the coaches connection to the Pats. I know there's a dubious history with some of the Bellichek tree's success in the NFL but maybe these guys are different. Maybe with Judge having been that ST coach and working with offensive and defensive players and coaches and delegating to his coordinators while he oversees is a good thing.
Lots of questions that will have to play out during the course of the season.

It could be a positive. Look at these teams signing unknowns or trading for unknowns. Guys like Antonio Brown, Josh Gordon, etc. They end up ruining the trade because of their off the field nonsense. At least with people you are familiar with, you know their character. That's probably why the Steelers wanted to get rid of Brown so quickly! lol

rodney27: You're right about the fumbling problem, tl65taog. I just don't think it can be fixed. He had in preseason, has it at a record pace now, and had the same problem at Duke. If he hasn't fixed it in all that time...I just don't know if he can.
