The loss of McCoy for the year shouldn't be underestimated. A six-time pro bowler and three times All Pro, they were hoping he was the straw that stirred the drink. Lewis the cornerback is reportedly out and Awuzli (sp?) Has been absent from practice. Sean Lee, now 34, is again hurt. And Vander Esch, the man who many think holds the defense 2gether, may be compromised with a neck injury suffered last year.
But it's on the other side of the deep Trench where there might be misgivings and mold.
Consider their previous strength of the offensive line: Frederick and Witten are gone and Hyatt to injury and Cam Newton to free agency Mark the loss of very valuable back-ups at offensive tackle.
It is also reported that La'el Collins reported to camp in bad shape and might be suffering health issues. Meantime, the Aging Tyron Smith is being held out with back injury.
The loss of Cam Newton is a small thing, but indicative of what happens when you're paying your quarterback 30 million a year.
I well remember the Ravens signing Joe Flacco to his Mega contract; the results were felt instantly at camp when some of his Supporting Cast of relatively minor league players could not be re-signed.
It is a league where brilliant quarterbacks Like Brees, Rogers and Wilson can't overcome a process that ties up so much resources in one position. Prescott and Flaco and The Goff's of the world might have little chance against the same process.
Jason Garrett is, of course, gone. And I have long been a fan. The Giants have had to 13 + 3 teams in their illustrious past and they did it with overwhelming Talent on both sides of the ball. It is a rare achievement and Dallas did it with a rookie quarterback of marginal Talent and a very bad defense. It was a remarkable achievement and little credited either here or in Texas. Now he's coming at them and if he had Ezekiel Elliott before he's got saquon Barkley now. And if Prescott was limited and even missed starting in training camp, Daniel Jones is a second-year player of much more Talent.
This is going to be an interesting year for sure, and when we talked about our injuries it should be kept in perspective. Dallas and Philly are suffering too
