Cardinals lockup Andre Hopkins with the largest contract ever given to a non-quarterback. And now the media apparently is making them their darling.
Lamar Jackson and Patrick Mahomes had Breakout MVP seasons in their second years, apparently a lot of the media feel we're going to see a similar ascent from Kyle Murray.
I am going to take some persuading. I still think that at this level you need all the arrows in your quiver or all the wrenches in your toolbox. There's too many throws that this kid can't make with his diminished stature. And I've always believed that the better defenses will confine you to the pocket and force you to make those Big Time throws over tall linemen close by. I think vision as well as trajectory are going to be limited.
But we will see, the game is changing that's for sure and maybe the often misguided media is onto something.
However, I think they are half right - there is likely to be a breakup and MVP season from a second-year quarterback.
Daniel Jones statistics are better or equal to his classmate. Jones went to visit New England without any of his skill players and the old master shut him out.
Evan Ephraim, saquon Barkley, Sterling Shepard all out against a defense that was leading the league and points allowed, yards allowed and interceptions. The resulting shut out skewered Daniels statistics and perception
Mr. Jones will have a full complement this Monday something he didn't have even once last year. And what I saw last year was an almost uncanny accuracy - uncanny and almost unmatched. We hear the term " throwing a receiver open" and I think that references throwing the ball behind or Beyond a receiver with a perfect sense of where he's going. Jones did that last year, but he also got the ball into small windows. In other words, his receivers never got open and somehow he got the ball to them - Where only they could catch it.
There's a lot of " wow, how did he do that?", to this kids game.
That is going to be regarded as hyperbole and treated with scorn by our negatives here, but I watched Jones last year and Time After Time was reminded of Eli's throw in the Super Bowl to Manningham. " how did he do that, the coverage was perfect?" .
From coaching, to the offensive line, to a defense that I am absolutely convinced is going to surprise, the Giants are simply improved at every position and every unit. The great losses came from Alex Ogletree, Antoine Bethea, DeAndre Baker, Nate Solder, Hilapio, Mike Renninger and the jack rabbit. In every instance, I'm going to call that addition by subtraction.
I believe in the second-year theory: Daniel Jones, Darius Slayton and Des Lawrence are going to lead this team and surprise everybody .
And I'll leave you with some more Kool Aid, if it turns out the way I think and hope it will, one of the critical keys will be the front three on defense. And in this year of the covid, the front three will dominate because Williams spent half a year playing next to Lawrence and Tomlinson. As another issue, that gettleman has been maligned about turns into a positive prescient.
The Steelers have age and missing players on their offensive line. Four if their starters are 30 or over, and Alexandro Villaueva is 34. Mike Munchek, the highly regarded offensive line coach, is gone. Two starters are missing for this game and a third is playing out of position . And they're starting a 38 year old quarterback who missed last season.
I spent a lot of the preseason reading about the ferocity of their front seven, a front seven that led the league in sacks last year and it is regarded as among the best in football. It seemed to me that the matchup favored Pittsburgh.
Bowever I think Evan Ephraim skills are going to be very important Monday. I think we can go double tight ends and protect the tackles without shrinking the field. The three wide receivers won't be enough to stop 8 in the Box, but the unique skill sets that Evan and saquon provide hopefully will. Kevin Winslow and Marshall Faulk, wow, I'm going to say good night and go back to sleep after that, and maybe reference this as a dream
