Let's start with the Bad and the one item that marked the night...
Run Blocking.... Hard to believe that it could be so bad. The finest back in football gets 5 yards on 15 carries. I have read that that's the lowest total in Giant history. The run blitz overwhelmed the o-line and it's not like Tomlin didn't send out his intentions... "it's all about stopping Barkley " was a common note heading into the game.
I thought Garrett and Columbo must have seen something in Fleming. He was awful. Gates ...worse. .. our esteemed guards (Hernandez and Zeigler) have to be reevaluated.
Conclusion: Terminal
Evan Ephram........... Even when he's healthy he's not a player. Good attitude, good work ethic, he's in the wrong profession, a football player he is not.
Conclusion...this team, even more than the previous editions, is about the bad offensive line play. It defines them and it seems (at this writing at least) to be irrevocable. Columbo and Garrett have their work cut out for them
THE GOOD...
Surprising because in an awful night filled with disappointments , there was some good
. Jones and Slayton.... both these guys are the goods. Jones didn't fumble, he ran judiciously and effectively and the uncanny accuracy was there. The second interception seems unforgivable, but they were outmanned even on that 19 play drive. I was reminded of a down hill skier who is going to fast on the edge, sooner or later he's has to fall. For that whole drive he was on the edge and forcing the ball into tiny cracks. Watch other QB's and most of the completions are to receivers that have separation. He had no separation and no running game.
ANDREWS..
The weak link looked good...even with an all pro over his head he more than held his own,
Williams seemed active and aggressive but I"m not going to list D. Lawrence here, and not because he wasn't good but rather because he was the disruptor or one man wrecking crew I was hoping for....
Conclusion... I don't have one not after one game. Pitt ,when Ben plays like that, might be as good as it gets and the worst matchup for us. But Dallas and The Eagles look vulnerable so maybe we're still in the hunt. Let's see what the next few weeks bring.
The Unfathomable...
I understand: only 14 practices, no pre-season and a seasoned and maybe great defense...still... it was like they never saw a run blitz before.
