What do you guys think of your first looks at Jason Garrett's Offense?
Obviously the execution wasn't very good, mainly due to the poor O-Line play (which Garrett should be accountable for). But I would at least say that it was more interesting and less predictable than the bland play calling of Pat Shurmur.
A few observations:
With the Giants having obvious struggles running the ball and in pass protection Garrett put out the 13-Personnel Package (1RB / 3TE's) 32% of the time. Very out of the ordinary. I have a feeling Kaden Smith is going to play well in this system. Infact, I'd rather see him on the field than Engram in ALL situations.
I noticed more plays where Jones used a 3-Step drop and got the ball out faster. I don't know if this is a normal part of his system or an adaptation to the Steeler's pass rush. Either way I like it and think it shows merit as a play caller.
There seemed like there were less "WTF" play calls. I think there was one 2nd and 9 where they ran the ball down by 2 scores but other than that I couldn't complain too much about the calls, just really poor execution.
With Barkley struggling to run the ball I would have loved to see more screen passes and dump-offs designed to give him a little more space.
I had to watch this play 10 times to see if it worked by design or was a fluke play. 2nd and long against the 5-man rush they saw all night, fake sweep, dump-off to Barkley, lineman blocking down field. I like it! One of the few bright moments.
I'm curious of what everyone else's early take is on Garrett's first game as our OC.
