of course, losing Barkely is the bad. I'm going to offer up my Secretariat theory that's met with scorn here before. No one will touch sectretariats records because ibreeding a horse that can go faster - which means lighter bones and more muscle - means running a horse that will break down.
OBJ's cuts early were seamless. I watched and thought , "he is on the edge of a human;s physical capacity, he will break down." I think Bo Jackson was doomed by his superhuman capabilities. Barkely is 230 lbs. he makes moves that are damn near impossible, cuts and acceleration that is almost certainly at the edge of human potential.
In a way I think we're looking at a surprising contradiction: The way for Barkely to be better (where a big part of "better" means available) is to be not so good.. and then of course your contradiction creates it's own conundrum......LOL
The second bad for the day is about D. Lawrence and really belongs in the confusing column.... He looks like a decent defensive tackle.. I was expecting so much more. Huge, super strong (something like 36 benches in spite of long arms) and willing. He works hard and is intelligent and hungry. Year two used to be the year of exponential growth, I haven't seen any growth. Much less the impact player I was convinced we were getting...
The Good.... I found plenty of "good" and wrote about it on several other threads. But I'll add to it here.
Half time adjustments... down 10-0 and in a position to fold, they played a much better second half and that without Saquon. I love the ambiance that Garrett brings to the field. Something very calm, poised and professional.
Frackell..and Martinez... I thought frackell was just a pass rusher, He had some great plays against the run and was all over the field. If Marcus was the best we had last year, its significant that he's seeing very limited time,. This is a nice corp of linebackers that I still don't believe couldn't have used Ryan Connoly.
Bradbury....that wsa a great interce;ption at a critical time. And we're starting to see a defense that can force turnovers.
The O line, in my mind they came together in the second half. This was a fine defense and they've added Quinn. The Oline was giving protection on those final desperate drives against a defense that was rested.
