Losing football is hard to watch. I rewatched both games and tried to watch in a glass half full way. I focused on 3 things
1. QB
2. Oline
3. Overall defense
Start with QB. Jones actually didn’t play that bad considering the amount of pressure he has been under and the down and distance the offense put him in as a whole. Jones kept good footwork throughout high pressure situations. He was going through his progressions and did trust his protection 100% even when it wasn’t there. His reads were on the most part a little slow witch led to sacks or bad throws in heavy traffic and a messy pocket. But he stood in there. There were plays when there were just no one open. He needs to realize that and run for what he can or just throw it away. Jones stood in there and waited for someone to open up. That’s correctable. With to many negative runs. Jones was in 3rd and 10 plus yards a lot. I didn’t count but he was in 3rd and long often. And he did move the chains more then I remembered. He does throw a very accurate ball when he sees the field and gets the ball out. Actually it’s pretty impressive.
Oline. This unit played bad together but played good individually. Let me explain. I’m not sure if I’m wording that correctly but it sounds good to me. When you watch them block. They are blocking the guy in front of them. And seem to be blocking them well. It’s the blocking the players that are not in front of them they are missing and combination blocks. For example. There were a handful of times pressure was brought on the left where Thomas and Hernandez are. Bringing 3 rushers with 2 blockers. I may be mistaken but general rule is block the guy closest to the QB. And they did that. Leaving the outside rusher free. I would rewatch the play. Gates was helping Zietler on the other side blocking 1 rusher. To me that’s on Gates. Not Thomas or Hernandez. I maybe wrong but I don’t think Gates is lining these guys up correctly. I would imagine Gates would slide over and pick up 1 rusher, and Hernandez the other with Thomas on the other. Take not that some of these rushers pulled and wrapped around the outside. Once these guys understand blocking os a unit and figures out who blocks who. They will be fine . Sane in runblocking. I saw combination blocks passed off and just plain muffled by both blockers. Either they engaged to long allowing a free player untouched in the gap or the didn’t hold the combination block long enough disengagement was to early and there was a free defender in the gap. Results were negative runs. Now some of that was Barkley too. He did have a few runs where he could of got a few yards if he just ran behind his pads and got low. But he bounced it to the outside and got racked for 5 or more yard losses
Defense.
This unit actually plays pretty good together. You can see there is chemistry in this defense. They play pretty solid team defense. There coverage is a little loose here and there but it’s light years ahead of what we have been watching the last 2 years prior. Ballentine and Love are the weak links in my opinion on this unit. But still not bad. As a unit they do bring pressure in form of extra rusher from everywhere but Carter is getting pressure consistently. If they get better by the week by mid season this unit could become very stingy. Love just seems very slow and behind back there and takes bad angles. He also has poor effort on some of his tackling. Ballentine has some work to do with his craft and it looks like he has his footwork incorrect. Just looks out of place.
Overall there is actually good football in this team. It’s there!!! It just needs to get more consistent and I feel with a few wins and some confidence with getting better. This team will win some games. They need to find a win and continue to get better
