Theres a billion and one thread talking about qbs and their tenure in college, and let me give you a few tips about what the seasoned scouts in the know actually look for. First no one gives a rats azz how your fave qb excels against Podunk State or any other mid majors this is for the Madden type fan who doesnt bother to learn the game just to repeat ad nauseam what the talking heads throw on the dung pile.
Qbs are not always interchangeable and need to have their skill those matching the scheme the team runs. What the team runs is usually following the common sense approach such as the difference thats so evident between dome teams and cold weather out door squads. There are a lot of variations still of hybrids based on wco principles, a few still vertical attacking teams and also air raid/ air coryell type approaches/
With evaluation the throwing motion there are a few key items to look at that hopefully are repeatable in each throw properly set up.During the drop back look for the helmet with face mask positioned to look straight down the field and shoulders open to the field. Holding the ball properly during the drop back is next to keep in mind with elbows level with each other forming a triangle between them and the ball. The next movement is know as the short circle, self explanatory in the way it describes moving the ball to the load position while moving the ball in an upward and away from the chest without letting the height of the ball not dip below chest level.
Done properly this movement allows a much faster release and we know how important that is. Also the technique can greatly shorten the travel motion on the throw. Allowing the ball to movein an upward and slightly back direction should know have the arm in an L shaped position. Keeping the l shape higher near the head allows maximum throwing force .As the ball is cocked before release the term zero position comes into play, the elbow needs to be up to 6 inches ahead of the shoulder and have a 45 degree angle up and out. Zero is an orthopedic turn which means the rotator cuff is in a neutral no strain position.
Letting the ball fire out with complete extension, firing the wrist properly, helps with speed, accuracy and power in an over the top version of the release completes the basic sequence properly. Not to limit or leave out the footwork, the body torsion , the step into the throw but just providing some basic ideas to do your own scouting on your favorite prospect in the draft.
