As a lifelong Giants fan I never thought I'd see this day. And it pains me to accept it.
There have always been "laughing stock" franchises: The Browns, Jets, Redskins, Saints (of yesteryear), etc. A franchise that every fan of every other team knew exactly what they are/were year in and year out. A disastrous franchise.
We are now that new low.
The aforementioned teams also have another thing in common, aside from the lack of wins. They are franchises in constant "scramble" mode with no stability. New GMs. New coaching staffs. New front office roles. New rosters. Yet the results remain the same: lack of wins and competitiveness.
For years it was McAdoo. A "loser" HC. "Denny's Menu," "oversized suit," "dumb haircut..." everything imaginable thrown at this guy to assign the blame to him. McAdoo is let go. New HC and coaching staff are even worse.
Now Shurmur is in the crosshairs. A pitiful track record as a head coach, why should we expect anything different with the Giants? And he too had dismal results with embarrassing team play. No competitiveness. Lack of wins.
So Shurmur is fired and we step outside the box and bring in a potentially fresh, up and coming new mind to take over. Yet again same results. No competitiveness. Lack of wins.
So we look one level higher to assign the blame. For years Giants fans ripped Reese for creating a disaster of a roster. For neglecting the OL.. the ultimate demise of the team. Every excuse as to why this team is not competitive and not creating wins all points to Reese and his moves. So the Giants fire Reese and bring in Gettleman.
Gettleman completely guts Reese's roster. Purges bad contracts, spends an enormous amount of equity on the OL, drafts the future QB and RB, trades and/or signs for the defense... and yet the same results: No competitiveness and lack of wins.
The Giants have been the worst team in football over the course of the last 3.25 years. In those 3.25 years we've had:
4 head coaches.
3 different coaching staffs.
2 general managers.
And through it all, we've picked atop the draft for three straight years and have only produced the lowest win total in the NFL in that same time span. And guess what? We're headed for another high draft pick and more than likely not much competitiveness or wins in 2021 either.
That is a franchise in turmoil. That is exactly what everyone mocks the Browns, Jets, Redskins, etc to be. That's who the Giants are now.
Lots of high draft picks.
Lots of equity thrown into the roster.
Lots of roster turnover.
Lots of head coaches.
Lots of coaching staffs
Multiple GMs.
Multiple front office structures.
^ These are all variables.
Same results: No competitiveness and lack of wins.
The one and only constant: Ownership.
As Giants fans it is customary to argue about where to assign the blame. The players, the coaches, the general managers, etc. And they all deserve their fair share. However we need to take a few steps back from the microscopic arguments on a message board and look at this from the 30,000' view. It's the ownership.
The same target that everyone eventually lands on when talking about the Browns, Jets, Redskins, etc.
And considering ownership rarely changes, I'm afraid that we, as fans, are stuck with this new low for awhile. Mara always talks a great game. But most of us see it as a thin veil covering up ineptitude.
Until Mara has a shift in his paradigm we have to accept the fact that going into every season we should expect the same results: No competitiveness. Lack of wins.
