The comparisons to Barry Sanders are way off the mark. I see one move in Barkley and he sometimes makes people miss with that move, but Sanders had multiple moves and his moves were devastating. I don't see that in Barkley.
Barkley goes down pretty much on first contact. He has that one move to make defenders miss, but if it doesn't work and they get a hand on him, he goes down. I don't see enough yards after contact.
I don't see the A.Peterson comparisons. Peterson was big and fast and ran through tackles. I don't see size and strength in Barkley's running style or the ability to break tackles. He is a finesse running back.
Sure, Barkley's ability to catch passes is a nice feature if you are looking to load up on skill players. I doubt Gettleman is looking in that direction, though. Moreover, the fact that he is a good receiver concerns me in some ways; I would rather have a more physical RB who can break tackles.
I put a lot of weight on Barkley's performance against Michigan State, a team with a very good run defense. I wanted the competition to be as
good as possible in order to project Barkley against NFL defenses.
When I watch Barkley, I see a guy who likes to bounce it to the outside and use his speed; he doesn't excel between the tackles like L.Fournette. And Barkley played against some weak competition, teams like Iowa and Pitt who probably don't have even one defensive player who will ever start in the NFL. If I'm taking a RB at two, I'm not taking a finesse runner; I want someone like Eric Dickerson, a punishing runner who could run between the tackles and yet still take it to the house.
