The following is a preview of the Senior Bowl with a Giants centric slant by UKGiantsFan (Ceri). Ceri is a draftnik that has been analyzing drafts for over 15 years.
Preview
Unfortunately, a lot of the top Senior talent declined their invitations and so did many of the Junior's who having graduated were eligible to play here. What's left isn't bad but there aren't many obvious top of the 1st round types on display save surprisingly enough from QB!
QB
Baker Mayfield, Oklahoma (N6) is the headline act and has seemingly cemented his place as a top 5 pick during this week. He's a little shorter than ideal (6' 3/8") but his arm is decent, he moves around well and he's very accurate in terms of completion percentage. I don't think he's in the running for the Giants pick but you never know. If someone falls in love with him enough to trade up, we might be the recipient of a windfall...
Josh Allen, Wyoming (N17) has a howitzer for an arm, a big build and great athletic ability. Some well known draft analysts have been going gaga about him all week but I am not drinking the Kool-Aid. I have seen him play against a couple of decent teams in college and saw him commit multiple turnovers, many bad throws after misreading coverage and show a real lack of accuracy. He's just not consistent enough to be considered as anything more than a project. I wouldn't touch him with a barge pole.
Small school prospects of interest are Mike White, Western Kentucky (S14) and Kyle Lauletta, Richmond (S5). If the Giants don't take a QB high and aren't set on developing Webb one of them may appeal.
T
Alex Cappa, Humboldt State (S71) received some hype from noted analysts such as Lance Zeirlein and Daniel Jeremiah the last few months and his tape shows why. He's been dominant at a lower level of competition for four years and tosses guys around like human skittles! At practice he has proven to be one of the best Tackles in attendance after he got used to the speed of the competition. I like him. If he shows up big in the game he may well be in discussion for the Giants 2nd round pick if we were to trade down or have an extra one towards the back end of the round
**UPDATE** I asked Lance about him on Twitter and he said "later" when asked about the 3rd round. DJ has just put him in his top 15 players at the Senior Bowl and says "middle rounds". I still think he'll elevate some at the Combine. He's working with a great teacher in LeCharles Bentley **
Tyrell Crosby, Oregon (N73) was named the Pac-12's best OL but I have some concerns about him coming from an read-option style of offense as many players don't translate well to the pro ranks (see recent Bengals R2 pick Jake Fisher who is fast approaching bust status). That said, he's not under powered at the line of scrimmage or overly athletic. Some practice reports say he's been good, others that he's struggling with speed and then getting beaten inside when he over sets. I haven't done much work on him yet so I'm neither ruling him in or out as a 2nd round target just yet.
Brian O'Neill, Pittsburgh (N70) has received some hype in the lead up to the Senior Bowl with Mel Kiper ranking him of the 16th best prospect overall. Personally I disagree with that vehemently. Having seen him in college on multiple occasions there's a lot to like athletically - he's a former TE - and good on the move in the running game but his pass protection needs a lot of work with his hand placement. At the top of the second round he might be an option due to his upside but I'm still not a fan
G
Isaiah Wynn, Georgia as many of you know is a personal favourite of mine this year but unfortunately will miss the game. By all accounts he's been absolutely dominant all week whilst playing with a torn labrum! With a clean bill of health he could have been a late 1st round pick. He's definitely high on my wish list for the top of R2.
Will Hernandez, UTEP (N76) has also starred in practice. I've seen nothing except highlights of him and he looks to be a 340lb monster at LG. In all likelihood he's cemented a place in the back end of the 1st round but slipping down to the 2nd he'd be hard to pass over.
Wyatt Teller, Virginia Tech (N57) is an absolute brawler of an RG. Dominant in the running game this year for the Hokies, he's reportedly shown he can also pass block during the week of practice. I like him as a potential 3rd round pick.
Austin Corbett, Nevada (S73) started four years at T after walking on and has played all five positions this week in practice, excelling on the inside. He's modelling his game after former Wolf pack star Joel Bitonio - a Pro Bowl calibre LG who made the same switch - so if he plays the same way an R3 selection is possible as he could start out at LG whilst providing cover for Brett Jones at C.
DE/OLB
Marcus Davenport, UTSA (S93) is another who came in with a lot of hype and seems to be polarising opinion with his play in practice. There's no doubt he's "toolsy" (height, weight, speed, long arms and athletic) but even his highlights show he's getting by with that at a lower level rather than with any sort of refined technique. He's not a young JPP from what I've seen and with Reese and Ross gone I can't see him rating highly enough on our draft board to be a consideration even were we to trade down a long, long way. Now I've wrote that, watch someone reach for him early!
DT
Harrison Phillips, Stanford (N66) stands out to me as a potential DE in a 3-4 system. He has some pass rush ability. I've seen him listed as a first round pick by some analysts but I think he'll fall through to the second round. If the Giants don't go OL in the 2nd round he's one of those that may well be on the wish list if we are going to play with JPP and OV at outside linebacker in a true conversion to a 3-4
LB
Ogbonna Okoronkwo, Oklahoma (N31) is the best 3-4 OLB in attendance. He's got a great inside move but he's not so speedy that he can best guys around the corner just with speed. I like him but he'd be a fallback option in my mind rather than a target in R3.
Kemoko Turay Rutgers (N58) flashes the pure outside speed that Okoronkwo lacks. Problem is he doesn't seem to have much else in his locker. He has extensive experience both with his hands down and rushing from a two point stance. Might only be a situational player at the next level but we have lacked a speed rusher since Osi Umenyiora left so he has some appeal in the 4th round.
Darius Leonard, South Carolina State (S50) caught my eye when watching highlight film of him prior to the Senior Bowl. He's fast, athletic, hits hard and makes plays in all three phases of the game. By all accounts he's "balled out" this week at practice too. Keep an eye on him, he's on my day three wish list, possibly as early as the compensation pick we're expecting to receive in the 4th round.
Fred Warner, BYU (N4) caught my eye in a few games this year. He's good in space, fast and can cover well. He doesn't take on or getting off blocks that well though so is more of a nickel LB type than potential starter.
