I spent my Saturday evening watching highlights and reading. I focused on players that maybe there at 2. Someone is going to go 1 to Cleveland. I narrowed the 2 pick to the below players
Darnold
Rosen
Mayfield
Barkley
Allen
Nelson
We all have different opinions on players as fans just like teams and GMs coaches do of players I’m going to work with my least favorite of the above 5 and work my way down to my top guy for the Giants
My least favorite is Allen. This is why. Allen has rare arm talent. But so did so many other busts drafted 1 or 2 overall. That’s not my reason why he is my least favorite but many people look at his arm and size and fall in love. My biggest hurtle is accuracy. And that maybe the 2nd most important quality for a QB behind smarts He is all over the place a lot. His feet are terrible and inconsistent and his throws are often high He is a project and project are a lot harder to develop then polished players
At 4 I have Nelson. He is hands down the best lineman in the draft And not to knock the position but drafting a guard at 2 for me is a hard pill to swallow There is so much more that goes into the line them a guys individual play. They play as a unit. Especially inside at guard and center It’s not the player it’s the position. If the Giants trades back to 6 and pass on QB I maybe ok with it
Next in line is Barkley. We seen this before. Top RB prospect with every thing you want at the position. Problem for me is this is one of the best running back classes in the draft I have ever seen. So for me to go RB at 2 with all the talent at the position this year I just don’t see the value
Next is Mayfield. This was a toss up between him and my 2 guy. Mayfield is a quarterback. He is a natural and is a natural passer. He is tough smart strong accurate and has good pocket presence. My problem with him is don’t watch highlights. Watch a game on all his throws. Not just the highlight passes. My problem with him is the same as most mobile QBs. They are not patient. He has a tendency to tuck the ball and run more then iwoild like. It is coachable. But that’s his natural thing to do He doesn’t stay in there and move to go throw his progressions as much as I’d like. I like QBs that use there running ability to throw the ball not run. If it’s a safe run and it’s a easy first down ok. Movevthe chains
My 2 is Darnold. My biggest problems with him are similar as Mayfield. He tucks the ball away to run a lot He also is extremely loose with the ball. In the NFL Defensive players are going to really focus on knocking that ball loose. His turnovers are extremely high. His skill set is top notch. I just really worry about the turnovers. He does go through cold patches as well. Much like the last 14 years with Eli. Outstanding for 3 weeks. Terrible for3 weeks
Rosen’s my guy. I no I.no he says things. He acts terrible bla bla bla What 20 year old doesn’t. Is it drugs or law. No. It’s just a typical 20 year old not thinking before they speak. Who cares!! Gil brant said it best. There are 2 types of QBs. QBs that are natural born to be QBs. And QBs that are taught to okay the position well Rosen is a natural QB. His foot work and release is natural to him. He doesn’t have to practice it. It’s lije breathing to him. He is so natural in the pocket. He reads he sets and throws and it’s very smooth. If he runs it’s to throw And his accuracy is by fare ahead of the rest And he had very little talent around him. His balls really come off his hands fast with a lot of spin. Perfect for work day NY He understands what he sees and delivers a great ball. He has had a few injuries here and there. But to me that’s not a red Flagg. They say he is to skinny 6’4” 218 pounds. Eli is 6’4” 222 pounds. Really. Your going to pass on a guy that is 6 pounds less. I can gain 6 pounds in a weekend. To me the things that make good QBs great Rosen already does it. And it’s natural to him. To me that makes him my quarterback at 2 if the Browns don’t take him
Darnold
Rosen
