I was about to put together a mock draft and it finally set in that we only have 5 picks this year.
We started with the standard 7 picks
We picked up a 4th round compensary pick for Johnathan Hankins in the 4th round. (8 Picks)
We lost a conditional pick to Pittsburgh for Ross Cockrell (7 Picks)
We traded the 4th round comp pick and our original 6th for Alec Ogeltree (5 Picks)
I'm a firm believer that teams are built through the draft. A lot has to do with the salary cap. There is INCREDIBLE value to players that make contributions on their rookie contracts. This is in comparison to the inflated cost we see in the free agent market.
Last year NO team had as few as 5 picks. Bills and Falcons had 6 picks while the Bengals and Browns each had 11 picks. And the Giants have NEVER had only 5 picks.
Right now the Giants have only 8 starters playing on their rookie contracts.

I estimate that the difference between a rookie contract and an equivalent FA contract is about $7Mil.
In essence for every draft pick that makes it to the starting level saves us $7Mil toward the cap and allows us to spend it on FA's and resigning players
This is why the draft is so important.
During the Reese era I've become accustomed to late round picks being mostly meaningless. The only big late round contributers I can recall are Ahmad Bradshaw, Kevin Boss, and Devin Kennard. I've also become accustomed to mid round picks being mostly meaningless, list of 3rd and 4th round busts is endless.
Resse's best draft was his first in 2007 and his picks were the catalyst that led to Super Bowl(s) Aaron Ross, Steve Smith, Jay Alford, Zack DeOssie, Kevin Boss and Amad Bradshaw....
Lets hope Gettleman gets off to a good start. I just wish he had more pics to do so.
