The Broncos acquire the Giants first round pick (2nd overall). In return, the Giants receive the Broncos first round pick (5th overall), second round pick (40th overall), and two subsequent first rounders in the 2019 draft AND the 2020 draft.
Something interesting is brewing. We know that the Browns are taking a QB at 1. We know the Jets are taking a QB at 3. Are the Giants taking a QB at 2? Well, if the Giants aren't, why wouldn't the Giants trade down to a team that wants one--the Broncos? The Giants could trade down to the Broncos spot, knowing the first three picks will be QBs, and thus knowing the Giants can get the player they want at 5 rather than 2.
The tea leaves are now pretty obvious on this matter. If the Giants don't want a QB, they will trade down, since they can get the same player (or the same level of prospect) at 5 that they can get at 2. If the Giants do want a QB, they will stay at 2. It's that simple.
By the way, this trade down is very, very, very comparable to the RG3 trade. The Redskins traded up for the second pick. In return for that pick, the Rams received: the sixth overall pick in the first round, a second-round selection, and two additional first rounders in subsequent drafts.
Even though there are no QBs in the 2019 draft, the Giants will have two first rounders in that draft and can trade the lower one for another 2020 first rounder, giving the Giants 3 first round picks in 2020. They can use those picks to draft their franchise QB in 2020. Thus, unlike the people who recommend the Giants take Barkley at 2, and don't have a coherent plan for finding a franchise QB, I have kept away from that kind of gross and irresponsible mismanagement by having a clear plan for finding a franchise QB in 2020.
If the Giants made this trade down, the top of their draft could look like this:
1 (5) Q.Nelson (OG) Notre Dame
2 (34) D.Guice (RB) LSU
2 (40) C.Williams (OT) Texas
Two hog mollies and a physical workhorse RB (instead of the finesse style of Barkley)!!!! I add this physical element to the Giants offense, while positioning myself for a franchise QB in the future with two first round picks in 2019 and two first round picks in 2020. Oh baby!
