If anyone wants to point out the 1st Round QB busts, why not point out the 1st round running back, top 5 pick busts out of Penn State.
1990 - Round 1 Pick 2 - Blair Thomas (Jets)
1995 - Round 1 Pick 1 - Ki-Jana Carter (Bengals)
1998 - Round 1 Pick 5 - Curtis Enis (Bears)
So based on the logic that their have been top 5 QB picks that have been busts so we shouldn't draft one, than the same argument can be made about RBs from Penn State in recent memory taken in the top 5 being busts so there's a good chance Barkley is a bust based solely on this logic.
Eddie I respect you a great deal, but you’re missing the point of my topic. I’m not saying pass on a QB because there have been many 1st round bust. I’m saying the Giants need to be very careful who they pick if they go QB. Like I mentioned before, they could get an all pro athlete that will be in the same category as Brees, Rodgers, etc. Or they could end up with an average QB like Mariota/Alex Smith. Which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, they are good QBs. Just not the latent you want with such a high pick.
If they are going to use a #2 pick on a QB, that player better turn out to be one of the best in the league. Like DG said, you are looking for someone who will be in the hall of fame. Quarterback is the hardest position to play in the NFL. Therefore the chances of a player being at the top of their position is much more difficult. Now take Nelson for example. There is less of a chance he will be a bust or an average player as it’s an easier position to play. Less risk with this pick. Notice how OG’s can be found in the 2nd and 3rd, heck, sometimes even undrafted (see Norwell). With a QB, usually only early 1st rounders pan out and even more of them end up average at best.
Nearly every year there are QB’s who are supposed to be the next Luck or the next Wilson. I think 1 maybe 2 of these guys will be that so let’s hope the Giants get it right. Using the #2 pick on a QB and missing will be much worse than using it on a play maker like Barkley or a hog molly like Nelson. Not saying these guys are can’t miss prospects, but the bust potential is less likely. I believe DG will make the right choice. I’m not against a QB. I hope we can get the next Peyton Manning. Any fan mad at that isn’t a real fan.
