This is an difficult situation Gettleman and Judge has put the Giants in. An 3-4 defense in today’s NFL is extremely hard to build. To win in a 3-4 defense you need 3 keys pieces
1. Your 3 down lineman need to demand 4 blockers
Williams and company have failed in this area. Williams was given that big contract to demand doubles and win. He compared himself to Donald. Yeah right
2. You need 2 edge defenders that can set the edge, rush the passer and cover.
That’s the most difficult position to fill. Those guys don’t grown on trees. The Giants have zero edge players that can do all 3
3. An middle linebacker that can shoot the gap and drop back.
Again zero in this category. Martinez was close but struggled at dropping back
The fix
The Giants need to move on from Graham and go back to an traditional 3-4 defense. It’s easier to draft and find players that can play in a 4-3 then a 3-4. Now you need to find DEs that have 2 responsibilities. Stop the run, rush the passer. Your linebackers are smaller and have less responsibilities in a 4-3 witch more abs more linebackers coming out are in that 220-230 range that can run. In college you need to find an 4-3 end that you think has the skill set to learn how to cover or a long athletic linebacker that you think you can teach to play all 3. In college they are rarely asked to do that
Also your DTs are lining up in an traditional gape there familiar with. The learning curve is smaller and they are only responsible for a single gap. In a 3-4 they are responsible for a gap and a half. It doesdt sound like much but it is. You also gave 2 inside linebackers that need to be on the same page instead of 1. An 3-4 defense is complex but effective if you have the right personnel. That’s why most teams run a 4-3. Easier to find players and it’s simple.
Lawrence doesn’t fit this defense, niether does Williams. Actually no one does. That’s the problem. Roche can play DE. Ozulari will have to move to SLB. Your WLB is an oversized saftey. Martinez is much better suited in an 4-3 as well. Believe it or not most of the Giants personnel is. They need to find a few traditional DEs and an weak side linebacker and they will be improvements on that side of the ball
I doubt this will happen. The only way I see this happening is Gettleman and judge go. Or Gettleman and Graham and judge changes his whole approach
