I watched the Bills vs Pats game along with the commentary of Eli and Peyton. From a pure football point of view the 1st qtr was the best. Eli and Peyton had no guest during that qtr so their conversation was completely focused on the game. For me there is just no comparing them to the ESPN commentary. I do not need someone telling me what I am seeing. Being able to watch the game thru the eyes of two highly accomplished QBs is pure fun.
What made this particular Monday night so much fun was the weather made it old time football. The only thing that was missing was the mud. Otherwise you had the run game as the dominant focus. I was reminded just how tough it was to play football in what was traditional football weather and why I have always loved games dominated by defense. What was great about the Manning's commentary is they gave me real time insight into the game that I normally would not get without watching the play a second time or watching the entire game again.
In addition to the simple pure joy of watching a good football game, throughout the game I was reminded just what it takes to run the ball effectively even when everyone knows that it is going to be a run. Belichick is obviously a future HOF coach. He came up with a game plan that was built to contain Josh Allen and to not only deal with the weather but actually take advantage of it. This particular game plan could not have succeeded without an offensive line that was capable of beating the defensive front 7 along with a defense that put enough pressure on Allen to limit his 30 passes to putting up only 1 TD and 145 yards passing. In addition the Pats defense limited the Bills running game to 99 yards on 25 carries. The Pats offensive line enabled the Pats to run for 232 yards which was a key to eating up the clock and keeping Allen off the field.
Yes, without the influence of the wind it probably would have been a very good modern day football game. For one evening it was just great fun to watch old time football. Over and above the game, I find Eli and Peyton very entertaining. So much so that at times it is difficult to concentrate on the game. I will take that trade off anytime especially when I do not have a strong emotional attachment to either team.
