I saw a debate between older fans and younger fans about the state of the Giants on another site. I thought it was interesting and there were some facts that will be painful reminders to old-timers and may help illuminate the current situation for younger fans. This isn't an attempt to make you feel better; it's important to understand the history of our team...
First of all, it's bad right now. This team is dreadful and nothing can fix that feeling. It is important to point out that as bad as things are now, they can get worse. Better said, they HAVE been worse.
How bad is it today? Well, we see with our eyes every week that this team can't compete, so here's some context. After the "wilderness years" (1964-1980) the Giants had a glorious run. The Giants made the playoffs in 1981 and began a major rebuilding From 1984-2012 the Giants had a total of eight (8) losing seasons. That is thirty years of winning and competitive teams. From '84-'12, the Giants appeared in FIVE Super Bowls and won FOUR epic championship games. So, how bad has it been since 2012... Well, there was one playoff game in 2016, but the Giants have now guaranteed themselves their 8th losing season in just 9 years. Awful, gut-wrenching, incompetent... pick your verb.
Here we are, staring at the 8th losing season in 9 years... At the tail end of the "wilderness years", just looking at the 9 years from 1971 - 1980, the Giants had ONE winning season (1972). BTW, even with a winning season in '72, they still missed the playoffs. It gets worse...
In 1963 the Giants won their third consecutive NFL Eastern Conference title with an 11–3 record. This was their their sixth title in eight years. However, the 'wilderness years were heralded by the loss in the NFL championship game. The Giants got edged-out by a stout Chicago Bears team, 14–10 at Wrigley Field. Little did fans know then, but this would be the Giants' final post-season appearance until 1981. That is an 18 year stretch without making the playoff. Looking at today, we are four years out from the post season (2016). In order to have the same non-playoff period as '63-81 the Giants would have to miss the postseason until 2034.
Championships are the goal of every team and the pinnacle for fans. It's hard to celebrate horrible football, but it's important to remember that the Giants are still only NINE years out from their last championship. After the last NFL Championship in 1956, Giants fans had to wait 30 more seasons until they got to celebrate a championship (thank you Bill Parcells and the 1986 Giants). In order to top that feat, the Giants wouldn't win another championship until 2042.
So, yes... it's bad, but we've been here before. Lazy ownership, incompetent management, poor coaching, under-achieving 'stars', lack of talent. Just remember it can and has been worse.
