Going forward the potential building block contracts that Schoen has to deal with during this off season are Jones, Barkley, Williams, Jackson, Lawrence, Thomas, and McKinney. By designating Golladay as a post June 1st cut the Giants will have 60mm in CAP space minus the draft reserve. I estimate that will leave 50mm in CAP space that Schoen will have to manage. Williams currently occupies 32mm in CAP space and Jackson occupies 19mm. I see the reworking on these two contracts as Schoen's top priority. To the extent that he is successful with these two contracts will determine the degree of flexibility he will have in dealing with the other 5 contracts.
I am suggesting that to get the team to a SB competitive level he will need to add 7 additional building blocks to the team. Hence I am suggesting that a SB level team has at least 14 key players ideally with 7 each on offense and defense. In looking at the current roster, I see the following players potentially becoming key players: I see Thibs, Ojulari, Neal, W. Robinson, Bellinger, Bredeson and Gates as likely or very likely key players. I am thinking that a proper way to look at those 7 players is that 3 will actually become key players. That suggests to me that a minimum of 4 key players have to be added to the current team roster through free agency and the draft. That presumes that all the players named in the first paragraph above remain on the team through 2025. If at the end of the 2023 season, we can look at the roster and readily identify 14 key players that are signed through 2025, then Schoen and Daboll have done their job very well.
If Gates, Neal and Bredeson become key players then the OL is already in good shape. Especially when considering Ezeudu has shown promise. Even with the addition of a healthy W. Robinson the WR group needs a true #1 WR. The linebacking group needs at least one 3 down ILB. A cover CB is another obvious need. Hence signing/drafting three players that can fill those three positions would be a very significant step towards building a SB level team.
