PFF is not the be all end all that its made out to be. As a matter of fact, during Jones's 2020 and 2021 seasons all of the Jones supporters were saying the same thing about PFF that I opened up with.
Jones's 2022 season, IMHO, was not close to what I would call a "typical franchise QB season".
Daboll and Kafka developed a "seasonal game plan" based on Jones's strengths and weaknesses. Teams learned after the Giants early success how to play them on defense. Seattle exposed them in week 8 when they were 6 - 1 (They lost to Dallas). The victories over the Ravens ( 3 - 3 without Lamar Jackson), and Green Bay (3 - 2) were high points. The other 4 victories were against mediocre or bad teams (Bears, Carolina, Tennessee, and Jacksonville).
They then proceeded, starting with Seattle, to go 4 -5 - 1 against tough competition losing to Philadelphia 2x, the Cowboys again, Seahawks, and the Lions. In those 5 losses and 1 tie combined they scored a total of 109 points, for an average of 18 points per game.
Their playoff win over the Vikings was their brightest accomplishment and then they got hammered, 38 - 7 by Philadelphia to close out the season.
The blueprint to stop the Giants offense was out of the bag and that, as well as the historically bad OL, resulted in the 2024 6 - 11 season.
Having said all this I think if Shoen passes on one of the "big 3" WRs at 6 I will be a very disgusted Giants fan. With a true WR1 Jones must lead his offense to a playoff season. Nothing less will do.
Lets use the 1/3/1/3/1/3 system of giantsfanfrombirth
The OL has been revamped and having Runyon and Eluemunor on the right side with Andrew Thomas at LT and a LG who wins the job in camp, along with a healthy JMS at center (hopefully he makes a lot of progress), all coached by OL guru coach Carmen Bricillo, fixes 1/3 of the problem.
WR Nabers or Odunze fixes 1/3 of the problem.
Daniel Jones must do his share and fix his 1/3 of the blame.
Let assume the OL gets a PFF grade (cough) of around 16 (middle of the pack not worst like last year)
Lets assume Nabers is our WR and has a high rookie PFF (cough) grade. Even when a safety cheats towards Nabers to help the CB out he will still be open way more then not open and this will help the other WRs get open and the running game as well.
Now lets assume DJ takes advantage of this much better QB surroundings and steps up. This is the 1/3 that worries me the most. Reason is that Jones cannot be used the way he was used in his "franchise QB year". Jones's is not Josh Allen. It has been proven Jones is not a durable QB when asked to run a lot. Jones was lucky he was not seriously injured in 2022 and when opposing teams defenses caught on to the Daboll/Kafka "Daniel Jones playbook". That is why Jones played mediocre for the last 9 games in 2022 and terrible last year until he was injured.
Jones needs to stay in the pocket, go through his reads fast and get the ball out. If Jones proves he is a threat to throw intermediate to deep routes over the middle and outside the numbers and complete 65% of them opposing defenses cannot stuff 8 in the box. This, in affect will help the run game and the RPO with Jones who will have more space to gain yards and then slide instead of trying to act like Derrick Henry and run through defenders.
Please Jones defenders KEEP IT REAL!
