I should have added " bitterly" to the headline.
I've been harboring slightly irrational hopes that everything was coming together and that this team could surprise. One of the rocks the dream was Foundationed on was the left side of the offensive line.
I almost don't believe what I'm seeing. Everything about Hernandez was positive. And along with solder and the year they had together there's no way that the left side of this line should not be good. Even having Hilapio should have helped.
But they not only haven't moved forward, they've slipped backwards. Unaccountably so. I am mercurial, overreact to the immediate, nevertheless this is more than just a reason for concern. My optimism needed certain things to happen, the left side of the line is a different category, it was more fundamental. Hernandez and solder w e r e a given.
As noted, I overreact and this was a small database, if anyone can tell me where I'm wrong or at least mitigate what I think I'm seeing, it would be most welcome
The second disappointment was the defense overall. The two times we've seen starting units they went through our stalwarts unopposed. The defense looked like the infamous James Brewer against a determined defensive end, " Excuse me sir, I didn't mean to get in your way".
Maybe they're not that bad, but that's the image I'm going to take away. Corrections and admonitions welcomed
Cody Latimer. This kid's been a surprise and a delight. He came back down to earth last night, I'm not condemning him, but he's also not what I was hoping 4 and not what we had to have in order to compete
Most of the good things centered around Jones, and Jones is for next year therefore the good is an irrelevancy.
So I've come back down to earth, progress is being made, they're doing as well as could be expected, but not as well as I was - unrealistically as it turns out - hoping for.
The caveat is: it's 2:55 a.m. on a Friday. I may feel different after breakfast.
