Joe Judge is a difference maker. There can be no doubt this young coach will bring an intensity and a passion that will rub off on the team. This year of course will be very different. I have watched the various sports on television without fans and some work and some do not. The NBA works! It's like a pick up game five on five you may see or not see while walking past a court in the city. The NHL does not! I was really surprised considering when you go to hockey games its a lot harder to see the puck than on TV but hockey has an excitement that relies on fan interaction. It's bit like Gladiators but hits happen and fans encourage it and the fighting. And then the response by the fans elicits more of the same. Tennis awful. We need to see thousands of people turning their heads one way and then the other to keep the TV watcher engaged. Important tight moments like tiebreakers play out as any other point without fans. Baseball... This one really really surprised me because I was rarin' to watch... Zzzzzzzz. There is a feeling of watching a long boring baseball game when you do on a nice HD set that is not only a feeling of warmth and safety but of Boy I'm Glad I'm not that sorry sack in the stands falling asleep. It's the pain and suffering of the fans that reinforces the love of the game... from afar. Rugby works. Golf is just as boring either way.
Now the big experiment Football. I have seen a tiny bit of college ball some weird game was on last week and the verdict is-- It Works! Football may be the very best sport to watch without fans. The close up camera angles are so entwined in our brains and the lousy in stadium fan experience that we have all suffered through that's there as well. Football is chunked out in familiar down and distance and once started, it is a war like sport that doesn't rely on fans. Think of any Giant game and third and long and here comes Hells Bells or Get on the Ozzie train everyone stands up the loudness builds and builds and then a deflated balloon everyone sits as the opposing team compete 3rd and 13. It's happened to me so many times! Only a goal line stand situation at the end of a game would fans really get into the players heads. On offense teams have trouble with fan noise so certain fans are an added boost to their teams defense (Seattle) and that extra bit of confusion will not be there and offenses in general should play a bit better early this year than defenses.
Usually it's the opposite the defenses lead the offenses.
Giant fans do not know what they have on defense so it is highly likely the Steelers do not as well. My hunch is Ben Rothlsiburger is going to get a very rude awaking.
Just How Healed Up is Big Ben? And how old is that arm? If the Steelers last practice is any indication Rothlisburger is not quite 100% back yet. A good smack in the face ought to remind the old QB that his arm is not healed completely. Ben is also playing with less body fat, this will make him easier to take to the ground.
Lets tool through the Steelers last practice notes for clues. First off they worked most of practice on Red Zone an area they failed at miserably last year.-
PRACTICE NOTES
• The Steelers started their competition period with a two-minute drill where the offense had to go 47 yards for a touchdown with 1:21 on the clock. Both the first and second-team offenses scored touchdowns. Roethlisberger got off to a slow start and used 12 plays before connecting with JuJu Smith-Schuster from 3 yards out. Rudolph needed nine plays before hooking up with Chase Claypool for a 3-yard score. Smith-Schuster caught a touchdown in the red zone later in practice.
• Claypool also caught two passes for chunks of yardage and then the 3-yard touchdown pass from Rudolph during the 2-minute drill. For the touchdown, Claypool went high over 6-foot-2 cornerback James Pierre and hooked his feet inbounds to complete the catch of the day.
- << CHASE CLAYPOOL = BIG PROBLEM FOR GIANTS >>
• Roethlisberger targeted Smith-Schuster four times and Smith-Schuster caught all four in the hurry-up.
<< When the Steelers go up tempo Schuster is the one to watch!>>
• Eric Ebron continues to impress with his ability to shake linebackers and safeties to get open. He got away from Ulysees Gilbert and then ran away from him for a long catch. Later, Ebron juked Marcus Allen during a coverage that got himself wide open.
<< Ebron has had a real nice Camp. He's trouble as well, this pass attack will really test the young Giants.>>
• Zach Gentry went against T.J. Watt in a one-on-one drill, and Tomlin billed the matchup as "Big Blue vs. Wisconsin." Gentry beat Watt on the release and caught the pass. Tomlin complimented him on it, saying "I see you Big Blue,"
Little did the coach know he was tipping' the ole' hat to the team he opens up against.
The Steelers are hoping the return to health of offensive stars Ben Roethlisberger, JuJu Smith-Schuster and James Conner will result in a better offense. Last year The Steelers Offense ranked 30th in the NFL in yards and 27th in points.
Steelers new-look offense. Additions of Eric Ebron, Chase Claypool and Anthony McFarland.
The Steelers are a base 11 personnel team. This means they most commonly operate with one running back, one tight end and three receivers on the field.
The Y receiver, who operates out of the slot, will be Juju Smith-Schuster. Smith-Schuster was one of the highest-rated slot receivers in football in 2018 but was forced to play more snaps outside last season due to Antonio Brown’s departure. He will likely move back inside this year, where his combination of size (6’1-215) and speed makes him a tough matchup for nickel corners, safeties and linebackers.
<, this is the most important point for the Giants scouting... Schuster back in the slot and Ben loves to give it to him.. Someone X-Man is going to have to jump a pattern and get a pick... We know where Ben will be looking in certain situations...
Bud Dupree and T.J. Watt have grown into one of the best tandems at outside linebacker in the NFL, combining for 25.5 sacks in 2019. The New face Around Town is Alex Highsmith, he is playing OLB.
Vince Williams and Devin Bush who will be starting inside linebackers.
Joe Haden & Minkah Fitzpatrick are DB's... This is a nice squad the Giants will have their hands full!
It's been a long, long road and now finally the Giant fan gets to sit back and see his team's future begin. Never before in recent memory have I had more confidence in a new head coach. I like the ' tough guy ' routine to the press and I think there's enough softer side for the players to relate to. He is young and they are young. Young people can do amazing things together.
The Giants don't know who they are they will be as surprised as anyone if the offense clicks and the defense sticks. Confidence breeds more confidence. An early TD or two will really get us fans excited. The theme of this year is twofold. A) Establish an identity on both sides of the ball. A swarming defense led by it's Outside linebackers and a pass rush bettered by a rejuvenated Leonard Willimas who finally gets that last step down. Defensive backs aplenty in many defensive sets.
B) On Offense the main goal aside from continued maturation of Danny Dimes this year the goal is to establish a power running game. 2020 NYG all about resurrecting the myth of Saquan. Sometime around the Jet game last year we lost Saquan. It was too much. The lousy line no blocking and his slight injuries plus the added baggage of anointing himself team leader and head of chatter... it was just too much. Saquan lost that spark, that ability to at any moment break a long run. Much of this was lousy play calling as well as zone scheme running that is now hopefully out the window.
The 2020 NY Giants shall be power running! The most improved player on the team this year should be Will Hernandez.
